The risk of a tsunami is greatest after an earthquake, volcanic eruption, underwater landslide or from a sizeable asteroid slamming into the ocean. Waves can be as high as 10-100 feet traveling at 20-30 miles per hour inland. While the West Coast of the US and the Caribbean have a greater chance of experiencing a tsunami, the possibility exists anywhere along the US coastline. Tsunami’s are extremely debilitating and any sudden rise or draining of ocean water is a sign that a tsunami may be in store. The devastation left behind is usually of biblical proportion. Those in geographic area’s susceptible to a Tsunami should have a reliable evacuation plan in place that has been well rehearsed. Alternative routes (mulitiple, if possible) based upon how congested an area is or what areas are affected need to be updated and easily accessible.
