Record breaking storms are becoming more frequent and more intense. In the last 6 years, the hurricane season has started before the June 1 season officially began and flooding has been made worse by the higher sea levels which allows storm surge to travel deeper inland. Extreme rainstorms worldwide are up more than a third since the early 1980’s and without flood insurance in place, affected communities do not have the funds to rebuild. With small businesses employing half of private-sector workers and cited as primary creators of new jobs according to the 2015 U.S. Census Bureau, the inability of small businesses to get back on their feet post a natural disaster bodes badly for local economies. Educating business owners about proper insurance coverage is important to communities at large.
