Many companies with 250 or fewer employees have learned the hard way that if they wait until after being hacked to deal with putting costly cyber protections in place, it may be too late. In 2019, nearly half of all cyberattacks were against small businesses. Even with the most sophisticated protections in place, given enough time, an intruder can get in. For many, it is too lucrative to pass up. Small and medium-sized cyber criminals can generate between $30-$50K a year in profits, while multinational rings can generate more than $1B. According to Cybersecurity Ventures, a business falls victim to a ransomware attack every 40 seconds. The FBI estimates that the total amount of ransom payments falls somewhere near $1B annually. Global ransomware in 2017 jumped 15x from where it was in 2015 due to the automation of cyber thievery. Without the regular training of employees staying vigilant for signs of an attack, it is impossible to stay on top of this every increasing problem. The numbers will only go up.
